Class of 2012 BYOM Pledge

The following program goes into effect upon formal announcement by the Head of the Upper School via assembly and.or email.

To act from our core values and to  increase a community of  respect and engagement in the dining hall,  students in the upper school who sign the Bring Your Own Mug (BYOM)  pledge will be allowed to use the dining hall during the school day to refill their reusable beverage containers for either hot or cold drinks. This new  program will start with members of the the class of 2012 who sign the pledge. After these members of the class demonstrate they can handle the new privilege  in accordance with the pledge they have taken, then the class of 2013 will gain the privilege, followed in the same manner by the classes of 2014 2015.  The time line for this grade level process will be determined by school administrators and student leadership groups.

To take the pledge (electronically), read the following pledge description and  submit the statement  ” I take the BYOM pledge”   in the comments section of this post. The first few dozen or so students who take the pledge in each class and who need one can contact Ms. Wales to  select a free reusable stainless steel mug for pick up.

THE BYOM PLEDGE:

1) I will only use reusable mugs rather than single use disposable cups for all hot beverages  on campus.
2) I will  act with respect, responsibility, and positive engagement in the dining hall, honoring WA’s core values.
3) I agree to the the dining use privilege program described above in this post.
4) Upon my or any other student’s failure to honor the content of this pledge, I agree that the use of the dining hall privilege can be revoked for a duration determined by school the administration after  discussion with student leadership groups.                                                                                                                                        5)  It  can take hundreds of uses of a single stainless steel container before the environmental and health impacts are improved compared to having used disposable plastic containers. Acknowledging this and that it takes more resources to produce a reusable beverage container compared with a single paper or plastic cup, I  will do my best to use and not lose my reusable container.
