Fall Concert Recap

The Upper School music department put on a Fall Concert on Tuesday, November 2 in Warner Theater at 7:30 p.m. The theater was filled with many people, including students and families, who had come to support those performing in the concert.

The concert began with two songs played by the Jazz Combo, under the advisement of Mr. Vaudreuil, and their performance seemed effortless. “Lady Bird” and “Mr. P.C” showcased the talents of each musician and impressed the spectators. The Academy Singers were the next to perform, and they wowed the audience with their angelic voices. The student run a cappella group, the Hillpoppas, led by Abby Small ’11, Roshun Alur ’11, and Sun-Mee Kasper ’12, followed the Academy Singers. Judging from the audience’s long round of applause, they were the favorite act of the night. Tamani Jayasinghe ’11 sang Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” while Julie Maclean ’11 performed the scat part of the song. Jessica Campbell ’11 sang the solo of their next song, Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite”, and she engaged everyone in the audience through her enthusiastic rendition of the song. The rest of the Hillpoppas sang in the background and danced along. In particular, Andrew Reiter ’13 was really into the performance and jokingly said afterward, “I’m sorry I upstaged Jess, and Julie, and Tamani.”

Worcester’s Instrumental Ensemble and Advanced Instrumental Ensemble also played during the concert. The Instrumental Ensemble played “Suite in a Minor Mode” by Dmitri Kabalevsky and “Fire Dance” by David Shaffer, and the Advanced Instrumental Ensemble played “Toreador” by Georges Bizet and “Millenium” by Richard Meyer. Both groups played very well and Mr. Liller accompanied the Advanced Instrumental Ensemble. He played the French horn and has been playing with them for over 25 years. The concert concluded with performances by both the regular Chorus and the Advanced Chorus, which included a wonderful performance of “Hari coo coo”. It was an excellent concert and all the performers did a great job. Mr. Irving and Mr. Vaudreuil’s hard work prepping for this concert surely paid off. It was another wonderful show put on by Worcester Academy’s music department.
